The word Evangelist appears in the New Testament three times.
“Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven.” Acts 21:08
“It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers.” Ephesians 04:11
“But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” 2 Timothy 04:05
Implication:
The implication of the word comes from the Greek. An evangelist was responsible for sharing the news of the battle field to the children and wives of the soldiers. When people saw the Evangelist running towards them to share the good news they understood that the battle has been won and the King/ Victor was coming back. With this implication from the Greek evangelists declare the Victory of Jesus on the Cross and take the good news to the children and families of the Kingdom.
The proclamation of the good news is in Genesis 17:03-05 for the very first time. God spoke to Abram and this encounter changed him to Abraham – Father of Many Nations. “Abram fell face down, and God said to him, “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.”

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 01:08 – Power of the Holy Spirit
“Your Word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path.” Psalm119:105, “For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 04:12 - The Word of God
“I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” Philippians 04:13 – Christ our strength.

5. Soul Winning:
“He who wins Souls is wise.” Proverbs 11:30
“Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.” Psalm 126:05-06
A Soul Winner has to be a doctor. Like wise they must acknowledge and make the person realise/ confess his sins. They must be brought to a stage of repentance and forgiveness.
5.1 The Reason for Soul Winning:
The salvation of even a single soul is pleasing to God. He leaves one hundred to search for just one. Angels in the Heaven rejoice with the salvation of a single soul. God does not want anyone to perish, but to be brought to a point of repentance, based on one’s free-will. He does not force anyone but leaves a choice. Souls are precious for God and He wants to save them from the traps of the enemy.
5.2 Needs of a Soul Winner:
He must be saved himself and should have assurance of his own salvation. That is the first crucial step.
5.3 Do’s and Don’t(s):
Do believe in God’s promise for wisdom – “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. “James 01:05
Do claim the deliverance from the fear of man – “I sought the Lord and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” Psalm 34:04
Do keep your eyes open for opportunities to speak to the non believers. Try to win one person in a year for Church Multiplication.
Don’t attempt to deal with more than one person at a time.
Don’t get down into arguments. If you don’t know the answer, it is better to admit that you don’t know it. As a general rule it is better to deal with people with your own sex.
Don’t rely on your own ability.
Don’t get impatient.
Don’t get discouraged, rather be encouraged and encourage each other.
Don’t forget that our only weapon is the Sword of the Spirit/ Word of God. Our battle is not with flesh and blood, but with the powers of darkness. “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” 2 Corinthians 10:03-04. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms...”Ephesians 06:10-18 – Armour of God.
5.4 Battlefield and a Harvest Field:
Evangelism is a Battlefield and a Harvest Field at the same time.
Ephesians 06:10-18 says that our war is not against flesh and blood but with the power of darkness. So we need to put on the armour of God to get equipped for the war. Satan does not appreciate the spread of Gospel and wants to destroy what God wants to build in our lives. Therefore an Evangelist like in an army is in the front line of attack.
The field is ripe and ready for the harvest but the workers are few. Being Christians it is our obligation to Evangelise. We need to take our steps out in the field and spread the Gospel throughout the world.
5.4.1 Four basic steps of Evangelism:
a. Ploughing – God’s preparation for Man.
b. Sowing – Man’s task to sow seed.
c. Watering – Water and nourishing by God.
d. Reaping – By His Holy Spirit through us.
(Mathew 13:04-09 – Parable of the Sower)
6. Personal Evangelism:
“Evangelists talk about divine appointments.”
“He who wins souls is wise.” Proverbs 11:30
When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other Apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 02:37-38
It is about friendship. This is the best form of evangelism. It starts with a circle or network of friends.
It is also sharing about Jesus with foreigners. Jesus spoke to the Samaritan Woman on the well about Living water although it was against the customs of that time.
In terms of Personal/Servant Evangelism we need to follow the strategy of targeting the Key Person – Man of Peace. He is the person who opens up the community e.g. the Samaritan woman with five husbands. She became the gate for all the people. Acts 08:26-40 – Philip and the Ethiopian.
It is about one to one basis. It is more personal and effective.
The result of Evangelism according to a survey was 80 percent people becoming aware about Jesus whereas with preaching it was 8 percent. Preaching means proclamation. It raises awareness. Evangelism is about drilling a hole, making a way or sowing the seed.
Engel Scale: People are in a different stage of readiness from point one to ten. We have to identify them and take them from one step to another. Some can be on point 5 and as a result of Evangelism we can take them from point 5 to 9. And so on. A good Evangelist knows the scale of evangelism and also knows the next steps to be taken.
We are living in an era of Finance, Mass-Communication, Media, Satellites, Computers and high technology. With their aid billions of pieces of information are passed on every day. There is a high advancement in Medical and Genetic sciences. Despite of all these advancements man has still failed to fight poverty and epidemics. Materialism has blind folded people and a need for a Saviour and Truth is nearly non- existent. Despite all of these factors the man’s most pressing need is the Spiritual Growth.
God has handed over an awesome responsibility and a privilege to take the Gospel into the World. Jesus has authorised us for this Great Commission (Mark 16:15 and Mathew 28.11). It is a covenant with Jesus to go out and take the Gospel into the World. God has kept His side of the covenant and we must keep our side of the Covenant. We are people with a Great purpose and a heavenly Call. Our approval as Paul says in 2 Thessalonians 02: 01-10 - comes from the Lord. “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit – fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. This is my command: Love one another.” John 15:16
According to Hebrews 01:02, God brought a message through His Son. “…but in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.” Jesus was the first evangelist sent by the father full of His Holy Spirit to proclaim the Good News. “For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” Luke 19:10. In Luke 20:01 – preaching the Good News about the Gospel. Jesus never missed any opportunity to preach the Gospel.
Being a good preacher is not a pre-requisite for being an evangelist.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 01:08 – about receiving the Holy Spirit and becoming witnesses to the end of the earth.
People need encouragement through an Evangelist. (FINE – Frankly I need encouragement)
Evangelism has physical, spiritual and social needs of the present day Church.

- Friendship Evangelism – By love and deed, as an example.

- A pure life surrendered to Jesus.
- He must be born of the Holy Spirit.
- He must have a fair knowledge of the Bible.
- He must be a man of prayer.
- He must have compassion for the Church and for the ones who are lost. In Acts 20:19 & 31 Paul wept for the souls of the lost ones. It was his compassion that brought him into tears.
5.3 Do’s and Don’t(s):
